Damp proofing

There are many forms of dampness found within a building, and they are not all necessarily caused by rising damp.They could be due to condensation, penetrating damp or even leaking plumbing items! Rising damp will occur if there is no damp proof course present, where the existing damp course has broken down or has been "bridged" by
high external ground levels or dampness in an adjoining structure. Internally, rising damp often results in ruined decorations and the breakdown of wall plaster.

Installing a new dpc (damp proof course) will prevent further damp from rising through the capillary of the structural brickwork, but contaminated plaster (containing nitrates and chlorides brought up from the ground) will continue to give the impression of dampness if not replaced - particularly on days of high humidity as they are Hygroscopic, having the ability to absorb moisture from the surrounding environment.

What is Rising Damp and Rising Damp Control?

What is rising damp? It is the process of capillary action, where ground water rises into brickwork or masonry that does not have an effective damp proof course (dpc). In older buildings a dpc may never have been incorporated into the wall construction, or the dpc may have been bridged by raised ground levels or alterations to the building or the dpc may have been degraded and failed. Salts left by rising damp can absorb moisture from the atmosphere leading to wall dampness in conditions of high relative humidity. This will result in spoilt and degraded plaster surfaces and decoration.
